Details

Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge & wisdom is worshipped on the occassion of Basant Panchami. Basant Panchami marks the arrival of spring. Basant means spring. The 5th day of the month of Maagh coined the name Panchami.

Saraswti, as she is worshiped as the goddess of music & arts is believed to have born on this day.

Rituals are performed & devotees wear yellow that signifies flowering of mustard & it is believed to be the Goddess’s favourite colour for it speaks abundance.

Among Bengalees, children are made to write their first word on this day which is considered as a significant step towards the world of education, art, music & culture. Education institutions remain shut for a day. Students stay away from books just for a day so as to please the Goddess.

The sketch is of an idol of Goddess Saraswati who is decorated to the worshipper’s heart’s content in one of the residences in North Kolkata.
